How to Force Aspect Ratio on VLC Media Player?

I’m a big fan of TV Shows and VLC Media Player is all I use to play them on my PC. Sometimes, the shows I download are in SD i.e. 4:3 aspect ratio and it looks bad on my widescreen (23”) monitor and every time I ended up changing the Aspect Ratio after the video started.

In this post, we’ll learn how to force a particular aspect ratio on VLC Media player so that whenever you open a video file using this software, it automatically opens in your desired resolution.

  • Open VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player Preferences

  • Go to Tools > Preferences or just hit Ctrl+P

VLC Force Aspect Ratio

  • Click on the ‘Video’ tab on the left and enter the preferred resolution in the text box next to ‘Force Aspect Ratio’. I’ve chosen 16:9 since I’ve got a widescreen. Finally, don’t forget to hit ‘Save’.

From now on, all the videos will automatically open in your preferred aspect ratio, no matter what the native resolution of the video file is.
