Google Voice in India

Looks like Google Voice is now in India. When I logged into my Gmail Apps account in the morning (5th February 2011) I was able to see an option called ‘Call Phone’. Clicking on it showed me Google Voice.

Call Phone

I haven’t really started using it extensively. There seems to be no free calling within India, but you can call any number in the US for free, so if you’ve got a relative who lives there, start calling!

There are still some questions left unanswered:

  1. When I try visiting I still get the ‘Service Unavailable’ message, which means that Google Voice has still not been activated for my account (even though I hit accept for the first time when the notification for Google Voice showed up).
  2. Some people say that this service is appearing and vanishing, so, we’ll need more clarity on that.
  3. There still hasn’t been any official announcement. So, we will have to wait to find out whether this service has been launch or it’s visibility is just a technical glitch.

UPDATE: This was definitely a technical glitch. There are no signs of Google Voice in Gmail today. Sad smile
